Mrs. Lim Soh Ngo

School Address: Maktab Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah Jalan Pasar Gadong Bandar Seri Begawan BE1318 Brunei Darussalam

Mrs. Lim Soh Ngo graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, with a major in science and minor in English. After completing a Master’s Degree in Science Education, Mrs. Lim taught general science to Grade 11 students from 1990 to 2005. Her teaching method enables students to achieve optimum learning performance. Since 2006, Mrs. Lim has taught chemistry to A-Level students at Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah College.

Apart from teaching, Mrs. Lim is also a mentor for other teaching colleagues at school, district and national levels. For her immense dedication and determination over almost three decades, Mrs. Lim was awarded the Excellence Service Medal in 2011 and the honorable Excellent Award in 2013 from the Sultan of Brunei.

Growing up, she was an unremarkable student and was often neglected in class until one day she met a teacher who encouraged all students to take pride in themselves and recognize their own values.

Thai teacher changed Mrs. Lim’s life and her career plan. She was inspired to emulate the teacher’s example and also dedicate herself to bringing out the best in her students. Mrs. Lim’s extensive teaching experience at the lower and upper secondary levels helps her understand behavioural issues among students of different ages. Her students feel equally valued as learners, and undoubtedly chemistry has become one of their favourite subjects. Having no barriers between the teacher and the students creates a classroom environment conducive to learning. Aiming to develop critical thinking and social skills in her students, Mrs Lim applies different teaching methods to encourage students to work as a team, interact in class and learn how to ask questions. An important characteristic of a good teacher is the ability to evaluate and maximize students’ learning potential.

One of her students was a slow learner who struggled to follow the lessons, and received failing grades. After a few months of one-on-one sessions, the student eventually scored an “A” in the final “A-Level” exams. A lesson learned from this experience is that one-on-one sessions help build a strong foundation for learning. Hence, teachers need to explore student’s aptitudes and inspire them to reach their full potential.
