The Republic of the Philippines

Mr. Jerwin Obus Valencia

“It has been my greatest aspiration to teach young men in their full potential to serve their fellowmen and most especially to be closer to God.”

School Address: Dingras Nation High School, Root Street, IIocos Norte Madamba, Philippines

Mr. Jerwin is currently a mathematics teacher at Dingras National High School, Dingras, Illocos Norte. He has been teaching at the secondary school level since 2011, after he graduated from Mariano Marcos State University’s College of Teacher Education with a bachelor’s degree in secondary education (mathematics).

Mr. Jerwin is an energetic and practical young man with a big heart. He initiates many projects to help the school and community. In his mathematics class, he makes learning mathematics fun by integrating mathematics into the students’ household activities. The project “Math” relates mathematics to students’ daily lives. It has created positive change in the students. They enjoy learning mathematics and becoming responsible for their household. In order to inspire his students to study hard, Mr. Jerwin develops a project called “Gift of Love.” He distributes supplies and learning materials as gifts to the students as an incentive for them to actively engage in their learning journey.

On his 29th birthday in 2020, as a birthday present to himself, he developed a housing project, Gbalaygi. He raised funds for housing construction to build a safe place for the less fortunate, such as victims of fire, to stay. He led youth in Illocos Norte to help families who were unable to afford the construction of houses. This helps strengthen faith and spirit in the community.

He also has concerns about the food in the community. He created the project “Back Yard to Kitchen” to help families cultivate their own gardens. One thousand seedlings were distributed. Moreover, he spearheads the operation of projects to help the community. For examples, environmental awareness during natural disasters or calamities, mental health through developing positive thoughts amidst the pandemic, activities for general welfare, and developing innovations for school

He is not only very active with community services but also serves as a coordinator for messengers of peace and substance-free advocates for the Philippines.
