“Empowering Minds, Enriching Future: Learning by Doing, Thriving with Purpose.”

School Address: Pusat Tingkatan Enam Sengkurong, Brunei Darussalam

Mrs. Shahrifah binti Haji Mohd Shahlan is a computer science teacher for secondary school students. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Australia, Mrs. Shahrifah wanted to become a software developer. She changed her path to be a teacher because of her passion. She believes that she can build and nurture students to learn through the learning process not through examination.

Mrs. Shahrifah’s teaching pedagogy is to “engage, explore, and excel”. She engages the students and makes the students enjoy their learning journey, exposing them to competitions, encouraging them with exhibits to broaden their views and allowing them to experience, so that they can deeply understand and gain core competencies in learning. She developed a learning methodology called “Experiential Learning using Multimedia,” which later evolved into a teacher training programme and lesson planning framework that has been adopted by secondary schools throughout Brunei Darussalam.

She encourages her students to practise problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills through real-world experiences. She also observes every student’s strengths and weaknesses so that she can empower their strengths and eliminate their weaknesses. Mrs. Shahrifah pioneered an innovative teaching technique that significantly impacted her students’ performance. Through her unwavering commitment and perseverance, her students have achieved numerous national distinctions, particularly in A-level examinations, where they consistently score above 90% annually.

Due to her expertise, she has been appointed as the School-Based Moderator for the Brunei Teacher Standard 2.0 System, and subsequently leads the Teaching Performance Appraisal Support Team. Her tireless dedication to teaching and education earned her the national Outstanding Teacher Award in 2023.
