It is a great pleasure for me to be here at the opening of SEAMEO – UNESCO Education Congress and Expo. I wish to congratulate the host organisations on their successful collaboration. It is essential to create this kind of opportunities for effective communication between various stakeholders in order to share best practices, generate new ideas and fresh approaches and avoid overlap in projects and activities undertaken. It is this sharing of knowledge and information that will help us be more responsive to the needs and aspirations of all citizens, regardless of age, profession, distance or geography and will ensure our people’s ability to adapt to rapidly changing times and needs.

We all admit the fact that investment in education benefits overall quality of life, accelerates economic growth, impacts on health and nutrition, and affects natural resource management. For this reason, we should make every effort to meet our international commitment to Education for All in all countries of the world. We must constantly question whether the education received is relevant in the world we live in today.

I would like to thank SEAMEO and UNESCO for hosting this Congress and also the co-host, the Ministry of Education of Thailand. I believe that the Congress will make a valuable contribution to issues of education and development in the region.

I now declare the Congress open and wish you all pleasant and productive three days.
