Eleven teachers from 11 Southeast Asian nations have been selected as recipients of the prestigious Princess Maha Chakri Awards for their outstanding roles in life-changing learning and educational development.

This international award is dedicated to honour teachers devoted in teaching at the basic education level and equivalent. The Princess Maha Chakri Award is administered by the Princess Maha Chakri Award Foundation, in collaboration with the Teachers Council of Thailand under the supervision of the Thailand Ministry of Education, the Quality Learning Foundation and other partner agencies.

Dr.Krissanapong Kirtikara, Chairman of the Princess Maha Chakri Award Foundation, recently announced the list of award-winning teachers endorsed by the committee chaired by Her Royal Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn during the annual general meeting.

The 11 recipients are Madam Lim Soh Ngo from Brunei Darussalam, Mrs. Dy Sophorn from Cambodia, Mr. Encon Rahman from Indonesia, Mrs. Kounvilay Khenkitisack from Lao PDR, Mdm Hajah Saripah binti Embong from Malaysia, U Than Tun from Myanmar, Dr. Jesus C Incilada from the Philippines, Mdm Sarabjeet Kaur Hardip Singh from Singapore, Mrs.Leopoldina Joana Guterres from Timor-Leste, Mrs. Phan Thi Nu from Vietnam and  Mr. Jirat Jamsawang from Thailand.

  1. Madam Lim Soh Ngo teaches A-Level Chemistry at Maktab Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah (high school), Brunei Darussalam. Her teaching method enables students to explore their potential and maximize it. Mrs. Lim is also a mentor for other teaching colleagues at school, district and national levels. Mrs. Lim won the Excellence Service Medal in 2011 and the honorable Excellent Award in 2013 from the Sultan of Brunei.
  2. Mrs. Dy Sophorn teaches English at Kumroukrong Primary School, Cambodia. The teacher creates the so-called “happy class” filled with positive teaching and learning atmosphere. She believes it takes family, school and society to support students to grow up with high education and morality essential for future success. Her twenty years of dedication to teaching services has been proven by receiving Samdach Decho Hun Sen Award in 2017.
  3. Mr. Encon Rahman apart from teaching mathematics, science and social studies at Mekarwangi Public Elementary School, Mr Rahman is also a facilitator for national training on Indonesian school standard. He is an inspiration to other teachers in West Java and plays a major role in educational development.
  4. Mrs. Khounvilay Khenkittisack, Thongkang school principal is an outstanding administrator who introduces public participatory approach among teachers and communities for effective student development.
  5. Mdm. Hajah Saripah Binti Embong teaches life skills, mathematics, science and technology at Imtiaz Yayasan Terengganu. A new generation of teacher brings innovation to class so that his students will be able to solve problems in their daily lives. His students also won several awards at both national and international levels.
  6. U Than Tun teaches English Basic Education High School in Ywarthargyi located in Myanmar’s Sagaing State. By putting in practice student-oriented teaching method, the award-winning teacher support Grade 9 students to pass English examination at state and regional levels every year. Students are also taught to be excellent in both academics and morality.
  7. Dr. Jesus Insilada is responsible for educational affairs at Alcarde Gustilo Memorial National High School. Dr. Incilada initiates and inclusive learning and culture-based education and ignites the pride of being indigenous Filipino through his teaching method and series of local-language novels.
  8. Mdm Sarabjeet Kaur, a science teacher at Anderson Primary School in Singapore. Mrs Sarabjeet unleashes slow learners’ potential and support them to learn with positive thinking. A dedicated teacher pays attention to every detail of each student and understand their academic and behavioural needs. She also helps support h.er teaching colleagues. Mrs Sarabjeet is also awarded Excellent Service Award 2017.
  9. Mrs.Leopoldina Joana Guterres, S.Jose Basic Education Central School principal in Timor-Leste. Having another seven school branches to be taken care of, Ms Guterres is excellent in resource management by bridging external support to school and educational development regardless of distance.
  10. Mrs.Phan Thi Nu teaches English while working on public relations and international relations at Le Quy Don Gifted in Vietnam’s Da Nang province. The teacher bridges international relations and expands her students’ opportunities abroad.
  11. Mr. Jirat Jamsawang has been teaching occupational and technological learning at Suan Kularb Nonthaburi School for 32 years. A teacher with vision, he is a pioneer in ICT teaching and robot innovation. A dedicated teacher gives opportunities to all children regardless of their capacities. His students are also successful in winning several competitions at national and international levels.

The Princess Maha Chakri Award was established in commemoration of the 60th birthday anniversary of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn in 2015. The presentation of the award is to honour Her Royal Highness for her outstanding achievements in the fields of education and the development of people’s quality of life, especially for the underprivileged.

This year marks the second time that the awards will be presented to outstanding teachers. Her Royal Highness will preside over the ceremony. Each recipient of the award will receive a medal, a certificate of honor, and a 10,000 US dollar-cash.
